These two were playing in the alley behind emo’s during sxsw. They were one of my favorites. I really love the timelessness of this image.

Raphael Saadiq swooned the crowd with his old school R&B sound. Beginning as a member of Tony! Toni! Tone! and continuing today as a solo artist
this guy has been carrying the torch of Al Green and the Temptations for the current generation. You can check out his music here.

During Smokey Robinson’s set he said that the place where he grew up was Motown USA. Watching him perform you knew that he was one of the few
people still around from that neck of the woods. I knew I was watching one of the last of a generation of musicians. The hits, stories and costume changes
kept coming as the show ran for over an hour.  My favorite quote was “when I’m asked what do I do when I hear my songs on the radio, well I
turn it up”. Oh Smokey.

Marousa at Red 7 for SXSW was a fierce show. This guy was on stage alone with a laptop and tearing it apart.

I’m shooting for SXSWorld Magazine for the festival this year. It was a real long night last night with many many bands. Sharon Jones at Stubbs
was a high energy show that had the crowd moving in that funky sort of way. Sharon was having a pretty good time herself too.

I photographed the Austin based band Churchwood the other night. We were lucky to be able to do the shoot in the empty house of guitarist
Bill Anderson who was moving to the other side of town the next day. I love the stark setting and noirish feel to this image and the separation
that shooting through the window provided.

I would recommend that you check out Churchwood live and also on the web here to listen to some of their music.  Their delta blues inspired
sound is really exciting and will definitely get your feet moving.
